Episode #12 with Ynzo van Zanten from Tony's Chocolonely

My guest today is Ynzo van Zanten, Chief Evangelist at Tony’s Chocolonely.

I’ll start by saying that this episode is slightly different than usual as the focus is more on the company rather than my guest. I’m sure Ynzo doesn’t mind.

Tony’s Chocolonely is a Dutch company focused on producing and selling chocolate with a very important mission – “100% slave free the norm in chocolate”.

During an event where Ynzo talked about the company the subject of slavery touched my heart deeply and I knew I had to share their story because as Martin Luther King, Jr once said

“The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.”

Now on a less serious note, and in the spirit of Tony’s Chocolonely of making serious subjects lighter and easier to talk about, I’m going to add that my friends back in Bulgaria and I have a joke that chocolate is the hormone of happiness for women.

I rest my case.

In our conversation Ynzo and I talk about:

  • Who is Tony and why is he (choco)lonely?
  • The bitter “taste” of chocolate
  • What does it mean to be crazy about chocolate and serious about people?
  • The issues on the way to making chocolate slave-free
  • Chocolate, CO2 emissions and sustainability
  • And much more

What was the most useful thing you learned from my conversation with Ynzo?
