Three things

Three things

This photo is from my first photoshoot for Reina Organics. It was a huge step outside my comfort zone but thanks to the phenomenal photographer Stella Gommans, I even had fun. By the end of the day I felt I could get used to this.

Every time she showed me photos on the camera, I thought to myself “You pretty thing..."

A few days later she sent me a selection of all the photos so I could make a further selection. Browsing through the photos, I could feel my self-esteem going up, and up, and up.

Until I came across the above photo. I felt like somebody had punched me in my stomach.

I saw the crow’s feet around my eyes.

How was I going to talk about skincare when my skin wasn’t flawless?!

My self-esteem plummeted and I started regretting choosing Stella for the photoshoot because I knew she doesn’t photoshop such things.

It took a lot of conversations with friends until I reluctantly agreed to keep this photo too.

It took months until I reconciled with the fact that these lines aren’t going anywhere.

It took even more time for me to accept that my skin isn’t perfect and it never will be.

Last week I watched an episode of Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook show called Red Table Talk. The subject was body confessions. Each of the three hosts had their turn and then it was time for guests from the viewers.

One of them was “Name three things you love about the way you look.”

Gammy, Jada’s mother, was to go first. After a few seconds of thinking, she said her hair. And then added  - that’s a good question. If I was asked to name three things I didn’t like, that would have been easy, but three things I love….

Yeap, no matter how famous, successful or good looking you are, it seems to me that our default setting is to look for our imperfections and feel “less” because of them.

Perhaps it’s time to start searching for our beauty instead and love our flaws.

My friend Jennifer, who was recently a guest on Hail the Queen, just did a Double Your Energy Challendge in 7 Days and one of the exercises was to go on a love rant:

How many things can you think of yourself, things which mean love, to finish the sentence “I am…”

There was a time, not that long ago, when I would have struggled to say anything. And for every tiny thing, I would have said, there would have been at least three I didn’t like. After my crow’s feet confrontation with my photo, I started working on that.

Part of the process for me was to put the above photo on the home page of Reina Organics. This way it’s the first thing, everyone who comes to this website sees.

I’m not a supermodel with flawless complexion but my skin and I are BFF’s.

My crow’s feet aren’t going anywhere but they are there because I smile. Is there something more beautiful than a smile?

But enough about me. How about you? What are three things you love about yourself?

A big announcement
A big announcement

For a very long time, over two years now, I have been trying hard to bend reality and make two separate interests of mine blend – empowering beauty and women empowerment. While the two have something in common, they remain two separate things.

This year has almost come to an end. Many people are busy with New Year’s resolutions. Others are reviewing the past year. Some are busy with both. Here's something which I believe most of us forget.
